What to expect

Imola remains one of Europe's last genuinely old-school fast circuits: walls near the track, gradients that load the car mid-corner, and a rhythm set by the Acque Minerali and Variante Alta sections. The modern chicanes calmed Tamburello and Villeneuve, but the speeds — and the proximity of concrete — are still deeply serious.

What the ratings mean for your day

Difficulty 4/5 — Complex. A complex lap that rewards homework. Onboard videos and corner names studied before you arrive convert directly into useful laps on the day.

Danger 4/5 — Unforgiving. Barriers, banks or walls wait close to the racing line in places. Your build-up discipline is the main safety system here: pace comes last, after knowledge.

Local knowledge

  • Walls line the fast left-handers that made this circuit famous — respect them all day, in every session.
  • Uphill braking into the Variante Alta flatters you; the downhill entry to Rivazza is where the lap bites.

How firstlap tunes your plan here

  • High-consequence circuit rules — an extra must-do about margin, fatigue and never chasing lap times here.
  • Layout homework — a task to learn the lap in sections (video or sim) before you arrive.

Ratings are editorial. Difficulty scores how hard the layout is to learn; danger scores what a mistake costs. They are our honest judgement as track day drivers — not an official scale — and they exist to calibrate your preparation, not to rank bravery.
